דמיינו שבפאזל של 1,000 חלקים אבד חלק. ואם 600 חלקים אבדו?
ואם מדובר בחיות הבר בעולם, ש־60% מהם הוכחדו ב־50 השנה האחרונות?
מערכות אקולוגיות מגוונות ומורכבות הן הכלי החשוב ביותר למיתון ההתחממות הגלובלית ולהתמודדות עם משבר האקלים. הרס וקיטוע בתי גידול טבעיים והכחדת מינים פוגעים בכושר הישרדותן ובאיתנותן של אוכלוסיות החי והצומח. מגיפות כדוגמת הקורונה מעידות על שבריריות החציצה בין חיות הבר והאדם ועל החיוניות שבשמירת מערכות אקולוגיות בריאות.
תמונת מצב הטבע משתקפת גם בצילום. הצלם האמריקאי אליוט פורטר הציג את 'ציפורים בצבע', תערוכת תצלומי הצבע הראשונה במוזיאון לאמנות מודרנית בניו יורק ב־1943. פורטר תיעד ציפורים דוגרות בקיניהן ומביאות מזון לגוזליהן, צילום שאינו תואם את כללי שמירת הטבע כיום. אבל אז, איש לא שיער את ממדי ההכחדה הצפויה. פורטר עמד בראש מועדון Sierra האמריקאי לשמירת טבע, ובמשך השנים שימשו תצלומיו להעלאת המודעות לשמירת הטבע בארצות הברית.
תערוכת הצילום תמונת טבע # 5 מדמה מסעות צילום של 65 צלמי טבע ישראלים בנופי הארץ; היא מאפשרת לנו להתבונן במגוון מינים ובמקצת מבתי הגידול, לתת את הדעת על הטבע שיישאר לדורות הבאים ועל הסכנות הסביבתיות האורבות לנו. התערוכה מזמינה את הצופה למפגש קרוב עם הטבע וחושפת טפח מעולמם הפנימי של הצלמים, אלה שנמשכים ליופי ולשקט של הטבע מתוך עניין, סקרנות ופליאה. שוב ושוב הם יוצאים להרפתקאות, מחפשים אחר מסתורין והשראה, אך גם מבקשים להעלות את המודעות לעולם שהולך ונעלם, בתקווה להוביל לשינוי ולהתריע מפני אובדן סביבות מחיה במארג החיים הייחודי לארץ.

In praise of diversity
Imagine a 1,000-piece puzzle with one piece missing. What if it was 600 pieces?
And what if that puzzle was the wild animals of the world? 60% have become extinct in the last 50 years!
Diverse and complex ecological systems are a vital tool for keeping global warming in check and contending with the climate crisis. The destruction and fragmentation of natural habitats and the extinction of species impair the viability and vigor of flora and fauna populations. Plagues like the Corona virus spotlight the flimsiness of the dividing line between humans and wild animals and the necessity of maintaining healthy ecological systems.
The situation of nature is also reflected in photography. American photographer Eliot Porter’s exhibition “Birds in Color” in 1943 was the first ever exhibition of color photographs at MOMA, New York. Porter documented birds brooding on their nests and bringing food to their young. His photographs did not follow the conservation practices of today, but in those days nobody conceived the magnitude of the extinctions to come. Porter was director of the American environmentalist organization, the Sierra Club, and for many years his photographs contributed to raising awareness of nature conservation in the USA.
The exhibition A Picture of Nature #5 simulates photographic expeditions by 65 nature photographers through the landscapes of Israel; it enables us to view diverse species and a few of their habitats, and to ask ourselves: how much nature will be left for coming generations? What are the environmental dangers lying in wait? The exhibition invites viewers to a close-up meeting with nature and opens a window on the private worlds of the photographers, those who are drawn to the beauty and stillness of nature in a spirit of fascination, curiosity and wonder. They set out on their quest again and again: in search of mystery and inspiration, and at the same time seeking to raise awareness of a rapidly disappearing world, hoping to bring about change and raise the alarm for vanishing habitats within the unique tapestry of life in Israe.
It’s the only puzzle we have.
