ונגליס קיריס, צלם יליד אתונה המתמחה בצילום אופנה, דיוקנאות וצילום אמנותי, הוזמן על ידי מוז"א, מוזיאון ארץ־ישראל, תל־אביב, לצלם את אוסף התלבושות המרהיב של הביתן לתרבות יהודית ולפולקלור. באוסף ישנן תלבושות מלאות ופריטי לבוש, ובהם כיסויי ראש, תכשיטים וטליתות מהמאות ה־ 18 – 20 . מקורם של הפריטים בקהילות יהודיות מרחבי העולם: אסיה התיכונה (בוכרה), עיראק, איראן, תימן, אתיופיה, תוניסיה, לוב, מרוקו, טורקיה, יוון, ארצות הבלקן, פולין, צרפת, הולנד ועוד. התלבושות משלבות מאפיינים יהודיים עם השפעות הסביבה והאופנה המקומית בתפוצות. לצד אלה צולמו תלבושות מהמרחב המקומי, בעיקר פריטים מהמאה ה־19 שנוצרו בזמן שלטון האימפריה העות'מאנית – מהיישוב הישן בירושלים, בצד תלבושות פלסטיניות ובדואיות.
התצלומים הודפסו על בדי כותנה גדולים, שעליהם נרקמו פרטים עדינים של רקמות זהב, מתכות עדינות וכותנה, המשחזרים באופן ידני מסורות רקמה מסורתיות ועתיקות. הבדים נבחרו בקפידה – הבד שמשמש מצע לתצלומים ולרקמה מחבר בין אמנות הצילום למלאכה. בזכות קיריס, שני התחומים משלימים זה את זה בהרמוניה ומקיימים דיאלוג חדשני.

Vangelis Kyris: Light & Thread
A Voyage through the Collection of Jewish and Local Costumes at MUZA
The photographer Vangelis Kyris, a native of Athens, specializes in fashion photography, portraiture and art photography. For this exhibition, MUZA, the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv, invited him to photograph the unique and stunning costume collection in its Pavilion of Jewish Culture and Folklore. The collection features complete outfits, alongside various clothing items, headdresses, jewelry and prayer shawls from the 18th–20th centuries. These pieces originated in Jewish communities around the world including Central Asia (Bukhara), Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Turkey, Greece, the Balkans, Poland, France, and the Netherlands. These outfits combine Jewish characteristics with a range of influences and local fashions that were assimilated by diasporic communities. Also featured are photographed costumes crafted in the local sphere, most notably 19th-century items created under Ottoman rule in Jerusalem’s Jewish Community, as well as Palestinian and Bedouin pieces.
The photographs were printed on large stretches of cotton, which were then embroidered with delicate details using gold, metal and cotton thread to manually reconstruct ancient and traditional embroidery techniques. The carefully selected cloths serve as a support for both the photographs and the embroidery, forging a connection between the art of photography and the world of craft. Thanks to Kyris, these two mediums complement one another harmoniously, while entertaining an innovative dialogue.
The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive bilingual catalogue featuring Kyris’ stunning photographs. The catalogue includes material and historical information concerning close to 100 costumes from different communities in the Diaspora, which are all featured in the exhibition, as well as compelling texts.
