קטלוג תערוכת פוטומנטה

פוטומנטה, תערוכת צילום רחבת היקף המתקיימת לראשונה במוז"א, מוזיאון ארץ־ישראל, מציגה את עבודותיהם של 35 אמנים ואמניות צילום, וידאו וסאונד מ־21 ארצות הים התיכון. פוטומנטה שתתקיים מעתה אחת לחמש שנים, מוצגת ברחבי המוזיאון – בגלריות, בביתני האוסף השונים ובגן הארכאולוגי – ואתריה מהווים מעין ערי נמל לתצוגות הצילום של הפוטומנטה. התערוכה, הכוללת מגוון מבטים של האמנים המשתתפים, נפרסת כמעין מפת ים או רשת דייגים.
שם התערוכה – פוטומנטה – קושר ומציף מגוון מושגים המשולבים זה בזה: פוטוגרפיה (צילום), קרטוגרפיה (מיפוי), מונומנט (Monument, מבנה הנצחה), דוקומנט (תיעוד), מומנט (Moment, רגע), מיתולוגיה והמדיטרנה (הים התיכון); אלה הם גלי העומק של שפת הצילום הים־תיכונית, המתהווה בין שלוש היבשות – אירופה, אסיה ואפריקה, ובין שלוש הדתות המונותיאיסטיות – אסלאם, נצרות ויהדות. שורשיה העמוקים של הפוטומנטה נסמכים על מפגשים בערש התרבות האנושית. הים, שבעבר שימש צומת דרכים, משמש גם כיום גשר תרבותי בין מזרח למערב, גשר הצף על פני ימים ועמים, מחלוקות וגבולות פוליטיים.
התערוכה מהווה נקודת מפגש בין מחשבות ודימויים, שנהגו וצולמו מנקודות מבט אישיות ואמנותיות; מן הים פנימה, אל היבשה ואל נופיה הפיזיים והמנטליים, ללא גבולות מדיניים מגבילים. בתוך כך נוצר בתערוכה קו אופק תרבותי, שבו משמש הצילום נקודת מפגש מנטלית, אמנותית ונרטיבית להכרת השונה והדומה; נקודת מפגש אשר מניחה את היסודות להקמתו של מרחב צילום ים־תיכוני משותף.
המושג ריתמוס (מקצב), התמה שנבחרה לפוטומנטה הראשונה, מתייחס למשקל ולקצב במוזיקה, בשירה ובתנועה. הבחירה בתמה זו מבקשת לומר כי כל אחת מסדרות התצלומים, והתערוכה כולה גם יחד, הן למעשה שירה חזותית. כך, גם לפוטומנטה ריתמוס משלה. אסופת התצלומים המוצגת בפוטומנטה מעלה את השאלה: האם יש מקצב צילומי ייחודי לצלמי אגן הים התיכון?

Photomenta, the large-scale photography exhibition held for the first time at MUZA, the Eretz Israel Museum, presents the works of 35 photographers, video artists and sound artists from 21 Mediterranean countries. Photomenta, which is scheduled to take place every five years, extends throughout the museum – including the galleries, the pavilions housing the permanent collections, and the Archaeological Garden – which serve as “port cities” from which one can depart to explore the displays. The exhibition, which presents the gazes of the participating artists, thus unfurls like a maritime map or fishing net.
The term “Photomenta” calls to mind a series of related associations: photography, cartography, monuments, documentation, moments, mythology, and the Mediterranean. These are the deep currents of a Mediterranean photographic language, which comes into being between three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa. The roots of Photomenta are nourished by mythological encounters in the cradle of civilization. The Mediterranean basin, which once served as a crossroads, continues today to form a cultural bridge between East and West – a bridge floating over different seas and people, conflicts and political borders.
The exhibition serves as a point of encounter between thoughts and images conceived and photographed from a range of personal and artistic perspectives; from the sea toward the land and its physical and mental landscapes, ignoring restrictive political borders. The exhibition thus gives rise to a cultural horizon line on which photography offers a mental, artistic and narrative encounter with both the foreign and the familiar; a point of encounter that lays the foundations for the establishment of a shared Mediterranean photographic sphere.
Rhythm, the theme chosen for the first Photomenta, refers to meter and rhythm in music, poetry and movement. The choice of this theme frames every series of photographs, and the exhibition as a whole, as a form of visual poetry. Photomenta, too, has its own rhythm. This selection of works raises the following question: Do photographers in the Mediterranean basin share a unique photographic rhythm?
