כלי עבודה ובעלי מלאכה ביצירותיו של מאיר שלו ובאוסף מוז"א

בכל אחד מספריו, פרש הסופר מאיר שלו בפנינו עולם המתאפיין בריבוי עלילות, מגוון של גיבורים ודמויות, ידע בוטני, גיאוגרפי והיסטורי, לצד אזכורים של טקסטים מקראיים וסיפורי מיתולוגיות של עמים שונים. בין כל אלה הקדיש הסופר תשומת לב יתרה לעולמם של בעלי מלאכה מקומיים, מלווה בתיאור דקדקני של מלאכתם וכלי העבודה הייחודיים המשמשים אותם.

התערוכה הספר צריך לעבוד מפיחה רוח חיים בתיאורים הספרותיים, כשהיא מציגה לצידם כלי עבודה ששימשו את בעלי המלאכה המופיעים בספריו של שלו. כלי העבודה המוצגים לקוחים מאוסף מרכז אדם ועמלו במוז"א, מוזיאון ארץ־ישראל, תל־אביב. זהו אוסף ייחודי ועצום של כלי עבודה, הגדול מסוגו בארץ, אשר משמר ידע של בעלי מלאכה שפעלו במרחב המקומי במאות השנים האחרונות.

מאיר שלו ערך עבודת שדה ופגש בעלי מלאכה, אך התמקד גם באדם בעת ביצוע המלאכה. לכן, בעבודה האוצרותית על התערוכה הספר צריך לעבוד נוסף עוד נדבך משמעותי לפריטים באוסף אשר הוזכרו בספריו, ולצד התיאור השיטתי והטכנולוגי מתווסף להם ממד אנושי ופואטי.

קטלוג התערוכה מספר את סיפוריהם של עשרה כלי עבודה המוצגים בתערוכה: מהיכן באו, לאיזה צורך שימשו, מאיזה חומר היו עשויים ומדוע, כיצד התפתחו ברבות השנים, מה התחדש בהם וכן הלאה.

The Book Must Work

Implements and Craftsmen in Meir Shalev’s Oeuvre

and in the MUZA Collection

Each of the writer Meir Shalev’s books presents us with a world characterized by multiple plots, various protagonists and figures, botanical, geographical and historical knowledge, and references to biblical texts and to the myths of various cultures. Shalev also attended, with great care, to the world of local craftsmen, offering meticulous descriptions of their work and of their unique implements.

The exhibition The Book Must Work brings to life Shalev’s literary descriptions through a display featuring the implements used by the craftsmen in his books. These implements are all part of the Man and His Work Center at MUZA – the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv. The museum’s unique, wide-ranging collection of implements, the largest of its kind in Israel, preserves the knowledge acquired by craftsmen in the region over the past centuries.

The Man and His Work Collection originated in the 1930s, in the work of Prof. Shmuel Avitzur, a scholar of everyday life in the land of Israel. The collection includes thousands of artifacts expressive of the deep interrelationship between humans and their habitat – ranging from tools designed to procure and process food, to traditional building methods and stonemasonry, spinning and weaving.

Meir Shalev performed his own fieldwork and met the artisans he describes, while also focusing on the execution of various tasks. Thus, the curatorial work on the exhibition The Book Must Work adds another significant dimension to the items in the collection, enhancing the systematic technological description of various tools with a human and poetic dimension.

This catalogue, presented as a boxed card set, tells the stories of ten work tools featured in the exhibition: it details their origins, their use, their material makeup and its underlying rational, their development over time, subsequent innovations, and more.
